Inspiring Interiors of Mexico

I had a two-week vacation to Mérida and Oaxaca planned for September - my first vacation in nearly 2 years! My boyfriend and I were able to make it to Mérida for a few blissful days, but we had less than 24 hours in Oaxaca before learning that my boyfriend's father passed away. It was sad and unexpected, but I know my boyfriend was grateful that we could be flexible with our trip and be with his family during this difficult time.

In spite of this disappointing news, we did our best to stay positive. We kept our spirits up through the rest of the trip by focusing on all of the beauty around us and making the most of the time we had for sightseeing. Mérida was our first stop. This vibrant city is the capital of the Yucatán and, in my opinion, it is vastly underrated. The architecture is elegant and sophisticated, with gorgeous attention to detail. We stayed in an Airbnb in Mérida and we fell in love with the light and airy look of it.

With close ties to the ancient Mayans and Mexico's history of colonial settlement, there is a wealth of cultural and historical destinations to explore near Mérida. It is common to see henequeneras, or sisal plantations, dotting the landscape. My boyfriend surprised me with a day trip to a Hacienda that was once part of a henequera, and it was an unforgettable adventure. Our tour included a closer look at the production of sisal, which is a by-product of Mexico's all-important agave plant.

During the twelve hours that we spent in Oaxaca, I decided that I will absolutely return again. The experience itself may have been short, but it was nothing short of incredible. I was mesmerized by the fantastic interiors. They transform into glowy, sexy spaces at night, like this very cool Mezcal bar we stumbled upon.

All in all, I am so glad we were able to see a little more of Mexico's inspiring culture. It may not have been the trip that we originally planned, but it came with a reminder and life lesson that I think I needed. Life inevitably has some disappointments that are out of your control. However, what you can control is how you react, and it can make all the difference for your overall experience. We chose to stay optimistic and flexible, in spite of unforeseen circumstances, and it turned out to be the best decision we could have made!

Staying optimistic and flexible is not just a helpful sentiment for traveling. It's a good reminder for my clients, too! When you take on a new design project, there are bound to be some unforeseen circumstances. When accompanied by optimism and flexibility, a little bit of planning and
professional guidance can help ease the burden. My number one goal is to help you prepare for the unexpected and minimize unwanted surprises with an organized design process!
