Seven Ways to Deal with Delays

Have you tried ordering anything home-related lately? Did it arrive on time? If so, lucky you! If not, you’re not alone. Nearly every vendor I have worked with has been experiencing shipping delays due to Covid-19. In the past, by ordering through a designer, you could occasionally get things expedited. Thanks to the current state of the world, however, not even those in the design industry can do much to speed things up.

Here are seven ways to deal with (or bypass) delays:

  1. If you can, shop locally. When you do, you’re not only helping the local economy, but you can establish a personal connection to the owners and employees.  Personal relationships will take you further than emails to an anonymous inbox.

  2. If you can’t buy locally, stay on top of vendors, calling and emailing regularly (but please be nice when doing so).

  3. If you love it (or you need it), don't dawdle! Not only are shipping times delayed, production is down for the very same reasons. Place your order early or you might be out of luck.

  4. Shop vintage or secondhand. Not only will you likely get a one of a kind item, you’ll get immediate gratification by taking it home that very day.

  5. Buy the floor model if you can. Sometimes, stores will sell items right off the floor at a small discount. Does the idea of that make you feel uncomfortable?  If you don’t ask, you’ll never know!

  6. Don’t get rid of your stuff too soon. I’ve seen this happen many times. Make sure you have an official delivery date scheduled before donating or selling your existing item.

  7. Lastly, take a deep breath. Yes, it’s an annoying inconvenience but keep in mind, it’s only furniture!

Bottom line. If you really want something, buy or order it right away.
